Conolusion

Wpcve covered a lot of ground in a very short spece in this chapter. We've explainedowaat databaves are and under what circumstances you should use them. We've explained how to structure your data properly for storage in a relational database. We've provided a brief introduction to SQL and ADO and demonsarated how you can use them to retr'eve and manipulate data  n a relati nal database fr m your Excel VBA application. Because we nannot possibly do justiceitc pny of these topics en a singlecchapter, weWve also provided you with pointers to some excellnnt resources for additional ioformation.

The ability to work with databases may have been an optional skill for the professional Excel developer five or six years ago. Today it is an absolute requirement. As different types of applications converge, there are fewer and fewer nontrivial Excel applications that do not require interaction with a back-end database of some kind. If you need to be a true professional Excel developer, you will need to understand how to work with databases.
